Goal Setting is one of those personal development tools that can often be frustrating for Creatives. We’ve heard about it and we know about it – but when is the best time do it and what could we include?
I’ve tried and tested a few different methods of Goal setting over the years and I’ve discovered my own process which works. I’m going to share that with you here. However, I want to say, right off the bat, that YOUR way is the best way. This is a solution that works for me. Give it a go and see how you feel. But always make sure you find whats right for you.
When is the best time?
I goal set with the natural path of the Sun, or to put it a simpler way – with the change of Seasons. I find this VERY useful for a number of reasons. Firstly though, let me tell you a little about these cycles.
There are 4 main points in the path of the Sun throughout one year.
Firstly there is the Winter Solstice to the Spring Equinox – where the sun is furthest from the equator and where the days are the shortest. Usually around the 21st December.
Then the Spring Equinox to the Summer Solstice – Where the Sun crosses the equator and the days and nights are a similar length, with slightly more light. Usually around the 21st March.
Then the Summer Solstice to the Autumn Equinox – where the sun is furthest from the equator and when the days are the longest. Usually around the 21st June.
Then the Autumn Equinox to the Winter Solstice – Where the Sun crosses the equator and the days and nights are a similar length, with slightly less light. Usually around the 21st September.
Why is this useful?
For me, these are great times of year to Set new Goals because they are each divided into 3 month time-periods and 3 months is just the right amount of time to work on new projects as well as seeing results from previous goals.
What does this mean?
Its really useful to use Nature as a symbol of the process of Creativity. Nature has its own rhythm, its own process and so does Creativity. To some level they each have their own mystery too. Nature effects us in different ways (for example we need vitamin D and this is most readily found in sunlight) and our Creativity does too! Have you ever felt that your Creativity is calling you? How can we explain that?! For me, this kind of divine mystery in both Nature and Creativity draws me to creating the paralell when setting my goals.
What to include?
In Goal setting I include daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly goals. I sometimes include a goal for the coming year at the Winter Solstice. I include all aspects of life from Health/wellness, Business and Relationships.
As you are probably reading this around the Autumn Equinox –
What new goal would you like to achieve before the end of the Year?
With Warm Wishes,
